Curriculum

Below are links to the Tennessee Curriculum standards. We do not teach these in isolation.
Please look over the 2nd-grade state standards and skills. Second graders do take the TCAP state tests towards the end of the school year. This will give you an idea of 2nd-grade learning expectations for your child this year.

Math:
We follow the Eureka math program (link to parent info). We supplement with other things to help the students gain number sense and number fluency. In addition to our whole group and small group lessons, we also utilize the following activities and programs to help learn second-grade math skills: number sense talks/activities, fluency practice, Zearn, iReady Math (adaptive) computer program, Reflex, IXL, Prodigy, math videos, math games/activities, hundred's chart activities, and problem-solving tasks. If your child is in my second-grade class, there is more information along with links to math instructional videos and daily assignments on our Google Classroom page.

Phonics:
We use Fundations and the Read 360 Program provided by the State of TN. In the summer of 2021. I completed 2 training courses one online and one week-long in-person session. This program includes phonemic awareness, phonics lessons, decodable stories, and comprehension questions for us to do daily. In addition to small group activities, we also utilize computer-based programs such as Reading Eggs and iReady Reading. If your child is in my second-grade class, there is more information along with links to phonics instructional videos and daily assignments on our Google Classroom page.

Reading and Writing:
We use Wit & Wisdom. This teaches reading comprehension & listening comprehension skills, writing & grammar skills, and other ELA/phonics skills not covered by the Fundations or Read 360 programs. The link above is for the Wit & Wisdom site. We also utilize computer-based programs such as iReady Reading and IXL. If your child is in my second-grade class, there is more information along with links to daily instructional videos and daily assignments on our Google Classroom page.
